Sheila Bird honoured
Sheila Bird, a regular contributor to Straight Statistics on a wide variety of topics and a member of its board, is honoured with an OBE in the New Year Honours list today.
She is cited for her contribution to social science. She said it was “a wonderful recognition of work at interface of public health and other jurisdictions”.
This has included work on prisoners’ health (started with her late husband Dr. A Graham Bird and John Pearce, formerly governor of Edinburgh Prison) on prisoners' health, injection drug users and statistical method in criminal justice, but also on military matters (with Colonel Clive Fairweather) and statistical excellence in journalism (through the RSS).
Sheila’s work is the perfect example of how statistical methods can enhance understanding, improve policy-making, and raise the standards of journalism – the objectives of Straight Statistics (whose name, incidentally, was her suggestion). Her recognition is very well-deserved.
Another prominent statistician honoured is Professor Adrian Smith, Director General, Knowledge and Innovation, at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Professor Smith, who gets a knighthood, is a former President of the RSS.
